About Ludlow

About Ludlow ... information for visitors

John Betjeman described Ludlow as "Probably the loveliest town in England".

Ringed by the River Teme with its four weirs to control the fast-flowing water, Ludlow is blessed with its dramatic Norman castle, Tudor and Georgian buildings, towering St Laurences parish church and busy market square; a beautifully preserved, vibrant market town.

Ludlow has an unrivalled reputation as an arts and gastronomic centre. Each summer Ludlow castle is the backdrop for an open-air performance of a Shakespeare play as part of the annual Arts Festival. In late summer Ludlow hosts a Summer Exhibition of contemporary art with internationally-famous artists. An international Food Festival takes place each autumn and Ludlow is the setting for several Michelin-starred restaurants and other fine places to eat. Ludlow Market takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays with a special Local Produce Market on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays every month.

Ludlow is the UK's first Cittaslow or 'slow city'. It boasts many independent shops and knowledgeable shopkeepers; three traditional butchers, four bakers, food shops, outfitters, ironmongers, a draper and a local brewery.

In 2009 the Art in Ludlow project was begun to raise awareness of Ludlow as a place for art lovers with its many galleries, artists and art events throughout the year.
